Wow!

Kate Williams

This is why you want someone with experience to teach you the thing they know about. It's clear that the teacher/author knows her stuff, and I can't believe how simple the steps are.

I'm three units in and I can already tell that this is going to be it. I'm finally going to finish this book I've been starting and stopping for three years. I peeked forward into the unit on making a drafting plan. That's where she starts getting into how to actually schedule writing into your life. I'm like yeah. This is going to get me to finish this book. I can't wait! Oh I ordered the guided journal and it's great. We're all obsessed with journals so yeah I was like let's goooo. lol

I went through it once fast to see what the content was, and I'm now going to go through it again slowly, following the steps as they go. I've never seen a class like this. It's almost like you can turn your worry off and just follow the procedure as lined out, and you will get it written. I found the unit on managing your time particularly useful. I have an elderly parent and three teenagers, and I work full time, so I never thought I'd actually get my romance novel finished. But I'd really like to earn extra money self publishing, and I've been trying to learn how to do it. The beat sheet she outlines is not specific to any one genre, so if you are going to be writing a romance novel, you'll have to go online and find one that is romance specific. I highly recommend this course.

I had a good feeling about the course after following the author on social media. I hadn't realized she also had a career in education, so it seemed natural to expect this course to at least be at a minimum level of copetence. It far exceeded my expectations. I've been writing for many years, so I already have quite a bit of knowledge on the subject. Naturally, I expected to be a bit bored at times, but I was pleasantly surprised. She proposes a method I had not considered (I did know about beat sheets and personally do not use them, though I found the lesson entertaining and helpful). The agent interview was a pleasant surprise as well. Overall, a very positive experience.

FAQ

  • What is covered in the course? Does it just teach me how to manage my time, or does it show me how to actually write a book or screenplay?

The course walks you through the entire writing process. First, you do prewriting: developing your concept, story world, genre, characters, etc. It also helps you get to know your personal needs and teaches you how to avoid burnout and attend to self care. You’ll learn how to use a beat sheet, how to build in great conflict, how to structure your story, and more. Before you start your first draft, you learn how to manage your time and do exercises to build out the perfect writing schedule for your life and goals. Once you start drafting, the course takes you through the writing process, giving you tools to deal with writer’s block and helping you with creative inspiration. Then you’ll learn how to revise your story, how to collaborate with other writers and build community. Once you’ve done that first round of edits, you’ll learn how to do a line edit. Each lesson has an activity, and you’ll have lots of opportunity for reflection so you can really own your process. On top of all that, you’ll hear from a couple of exciting industry professionals in the form of interviews, and you’ll see many case studies of how successful working writers manage their time and juggle multiple careers and responsibilities.

  • I’ve never written anything before. Will this be too advanced?

Not at all. It’s designed for people at all levels, from beginner to advanced. There’s plenty of support built in for first-time writers.

  • I’m an experienced writer. Is this valuable to me?

Yes! Many professional writers have benefitted from these techniques. There may be some things in there you already know, but you might be surprised!

  • What about authors who are neurodivergent and/or mentally ill? Does this course provide support for them?

Yes. It’s very intentionally designed with individuals with special needs, including neurodivergence, mental illness, and chronic illness in mind.
